McKinney to Host the 2026 NCAA Division II Football Championship

McKinney will host the 2026 NCAA Division II Football Championship Game on Dec. 19 at McKinney Independent School District Stadium, bringing a national college football title game to the city as the capstone of a playoff bracket that runs from Nov. 21 through the championship date.

The game closes out the 2026 NCAA Division II football season and puts McKinney's athletic facilities in front of a national audience, continuing a run of marquee events the city has landed as its venues and profile have grown — alongside the new commercial terminal opening at McKinney National Airport and the Sunset Amphitheater under construction along US-75.

The championship arrives during a season that's had its own local storylines within McKinney ISD's own football programs. McKinney North opened the year with a 31-24 win over crosstown rival McKinney High on Aug. 28, then followed with a 37-10 win over Princeton on Sept. 3. McKinney High's season went the other direction, including a 35-63 loss to Walnut Grove on Sept. 18 that left the Lions at 1-4 in district play by late September.

Hosting a national championship game typically brings a wave of visiting fans, media, and spending to a host city over championship weekend, and McKinney's turn follows a pattern of similar NCAA Division II title games rotating among college and high school stadiums around the country in recent years.

For a city whose other big venues — the new airport terminal, the amphitheater — are still weeks or months from their own debuts, the championship game gives McKinney an immediate, nationally televised showcase moment this December.
