McKinney Opens $53 Million Fire Department Headquarters Campus

McKinney celebrated the grand opening of a new $53 million fire department headquarters campus with a ribbon-cutting ceremony May 8, capping a project funded by a voter-approved 2019 public safety bond that set aside $75 million for facilities like it. The 10-acre campus at 2100 Taylor Burk Drive consolidates fire administration into a single site built to support a department that has outgrown its old home.

The campus includes three buildings: a 40,000-square-foot headquarters and administration building, a separate logistics building for equipment storage, and a new Fire Station No. 2, a 16,000-square-foot facility that replaces a station nearly 30 years old. Administration staff moved into the new building at the end of January, ahead of the formal ribbon-cutting in May.

The new facility addresses capacity problems the department had outgrown. Fire Chief Paul Dow has said the old Station 2 — the city's busiest — had insufficient bay space for the six firefighters stationed there, even as its staffing demands grew. That station alone responded to more than 2,700 calls in 2025. Department-wide, staffing has increased more than 60% since 2009, with 270 full-time positions funded in the 2024-25 fiscal year alone, a reflection of McKinney's rapid population growth over the same period.

"This facility strengthens coordination and allows our team to operate more efficiently while preparing for future demands," City Manager Paul Grimes said of the new campus, which houses 42 employees who were previously spread across the McKinney Public Safety Building.

The move also frees up space for the McKinney Police Department, which is expanding its own operations into the areas of the Public Safety Building that fire administration vacated — part of a broader reshuffling of the city's public-safety footprint as both departments grow alongside the city itself.
