McKinney Adopts $880 Million Budget, Holds Property Tax Rate Steady

McKinney City Council adopted an $880 million budget for fiscal year 2026-27 at its Sept. 1 meeting, funding police, fire, emergency response, streets, parks, libraries, and other city services for the year ahead. The budget keeps the city's property tax rate unchanged at $0.412284 per $100 of taxable value, the same rate McKinney has held for the current fiscal year.

Holding the rate steady wasn't automatic: city staff had to offset roughly $2.2 million in projected revenue loss to avoid an increase. The final budget followed an earlier proposal floated over the summer that would have paired the $880 million spending plan with a tax rate increase of nearly 1.4%, before council ultimately settled on the flat-rate version that passed in September.

The city's general fund — the portion of the budget covering core day-to-day operations — is balanced for FY 2026-27, with roughly $246.5 million in both projected revenue and projected expenses. The remainder of the $880 million total covers water and wastewater utilities, capital improvement projects, and other city funds outside the general fund.

The budget lands as McKinney continues to grow and invest in major infrastructure, from the new commercial terminal at McKinney National Airport to the Sunset Amphitheater under construction along US-75 — projects that add to the city services and infrastructure the adopted budget is meant to support.
